Costa Dongas is the sole owner and operator of Abyss Diving Australia. After many years of diving and instructing, Costa has seen many changes in the way divers develop their skills and advance their knowledge. Costa has been trained by some of the pioneers of technical diving, and is more than eager to share his passion and expertise with you.
From beginner levels to advanced closed circuit rebreathers, Costa has the skills, knowledge and passion to “help” you achieve your goals. Unlike many other instructors, Costa aims not only to meet, but to exceed certification standards. This approach ensures that both he and you are happy with your skill level before he will certify you.
Costa began diving in 1984, and has not been out of the water since. His passion for the underwater world and in particular wreck diving has taken him to some of the most remote and extreme places in the world. As he passion grew, Costa wanted nothing more than to share his skills and expertise with others.
“I wanted to show other people what I have being experiencing. I started like everyone else with an open water course, but quickly found this was not enough to explore the underwater world. The more I learnt, the more I was absorbed by it.”
As his experience grew, so did his need to explore the underwater world. Costa was fortunate enough to successfully search for wrecks in the Aegean Sea and explore some of New Zealand’s premiere cave systems. Much of his spare time today is spent searching for ghostly wrecks with his dive buddies in and around the Sydney region where he lives.
As his diving career progressed, Costa eventually hit a cross road and was faced with the questions of whether he wanted to teach others how to learn to dive. Be his “life long dream”, he charged forward and is today one of Australia’s leading technical instructors. Starting off as a PADI & SSI Open Water Instructor in 1995, he advanced his skills and moved on to technical instructing with TDI/SDI. Today, Costa specialises in technical diving using both open-circuit scuba gear and closed-circuit rebreathers, using air, nitrox and tri-mix.
